Hammertoes and How to Prevent Them

A very common foot condition we see in our offices quite often is referred to as a hammertoe. It is a contracture or bending of the toe that can become rather painful. As the toe is contracted, it rises up and can rub against the toe box of a shoe.

This can lead to irritation, as well as thickening of the skin on the top of the toe, often referred to as a corn. In some cases, the skin can break down and form a superficial wound that can become infected. The toe typically contracts because there is an imbalance between the forces of the tendons in the toe. Walking and running can become very difficult due to hammertoes.
