April is Autism Awareness Month. Did you know that autism can affect the feet? In some cases, especially children, autism may lead to delayed or reduced motor development, resulting in weakness, difficulty standing, or issues walking long distances. Running can be challenging for some autistic individuals.
At Progressive Foot Care, we do not necessarily treat autism, however, we do treat the foot and ankle concerns that can arise from the disease. There are many ways to address the foot conditions in autism, such as:
- utilizing custom made foot orthotics to improve biomechanics
- recommending home exercises for strengthening or stretching
- referring patients for physical therapy
- prescribing footwear modifications
